Miura Wedges

Miura Wedges

The New Wedge Series

By John Ehle

Miura forged clubs are known as the standard by which all other forged clubs are compared. Katsuhiro Miura has been handcrafting golf clubs for most of his life and he lives in the Himeji region of Japan; known as the steel capital of the country. This region was best known as the production center for Samurai swords, the finest steel weapons in the world.

Miura has been producing golf clubs there since 1957 and Mr. Miura has been improving on the ancient forging processes for nearly 50 years. His reputation as a golf club artisan suggests that his philosophy of hand-crafting each individual club results in a product from his own hands; "the hands of God".

Miura's latest addition to its remarkable line is a series of mild, low-carbon steel wedges. Miura does not produce a product unless there is a well-founded need for it. As more golfers discover that 2, 3 and 4 irons are not useful residents of their golf bags, they are pulled; initially replaced by hybrids and high-end fairway woods. As golfers discover that these clubs are used relatively infrequently, they too disappear....in favor of wedges. The fact that 75% of our shots are taken from 100 yards and in is compelling. The old paradigm dictated that there would be a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. No more.

One prevailing philosophy suggests that gaps between wedges should not exceed 4 degrees. Miura's new wedge line includes 51,53, 55, 57 and 59 degree implements allowing for a large variety of combinations working up from the conventional 48 degree pitching wedge.

I have two Miura wedges in my bag and both of them are visually stunning as well as functionally outstanding. The buttery feel produced by a well-struck shot is nearly as beautiful as the club is esthetically gorgeous. Anything that is as technologically advanced as these wedges are requires some insightful testing and this new series deserves that. A testing protocol should be set up by distance....depending on the loft. One finds that accuracy is commensurate with feel.

These wedges are offered with myriad choices of shafts and grips and assembly processes can vary from standard, through spine and frequency selection to premium; FLO alignment/puring. Be sure to select the correct shaft. Find a dealer near you and introduce yourself to a world class experience.

Best through the turf-anywhere on earth.
