Governor Evers Order FAQ Addresses Golf Courses

By Brian Weis

Governor Tony Evers and Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) Secretary-designee Andrea Palm issued a Safer at Home order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, effective at 8:00am on Wednesday March 25th. This order will remain in effect until 8:00am on Friday, April 24th or until a superseding order is issued.

After the order, golf courses and golfers presseed for clarification. Tuesday afternoon (3/24) Ever's issued a A Safer at Home FAQ, specifically stating golf courses were non essential business and to be closed.

Page 4 of the Safer at Home FAQ states:
"Will golf courses remain open?
Golf courses are not considered essential businesses. Staff can perform minimum basic operations as defined in the order."

Jeff Schwister, Executive Director of The Golf Course Owners of Wisconsin (GCOW), shared that only four states have been forced to closed golf courses. In addition, he shared that eleven states have similar stay at home orders but deemed golf as safe and are allowed to remain open.

In Illinois, Governor J.B. Pritzker's amended their Stay Home Order Tuesday to allow courses to reopen under certain guidelines. Golf courses must operate as a walking only facility. All food and beverage service is to remain closed.

Schwister is working with allied golf associations and their legal counsels to amend the Wisconsin Safer at Home Order.
