Getting To Know: Troy Burne Golf Club

An Insightful Interview With Dave Tentis, Head Golf Professional

By Brian Weis

Whether you have played a course 20+ times a year or looking to play the course for the first time, insights from an insider can help enhance your golf experience. Below is an interview with Dave Tentis who shares some valuable tidbits about the course, memorable holes and must eats and treats at the 19th.

Give Our Readers An Overview of the Golf Course/Property
Troy Burne Golf Club is a premier upscale daily-fee club created by the world-class design team of, accomplished PGA TOUR player Tom Lehman and the internationally recognized architectural firm of Hurdzan-Fry.

Tom's experience playing the most demanding golf courses around the world has given him the vision of what makes a championship-caliber course. But Tom also believes a course must be fair as well as challenging - testing players of all levels, while rewarding good shot-making. Design partners Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry brought their reputation as environmental pioneers, and helped to ensure the course would be representative of the native environment and topography.

The result of this expert collaboration was Troy Burne Golf Club, a world-class championship masterpiece, opened for play in June 1999. Carefully sculpted out of 420 acres of rolling St. Croix Valley hills, the course features over 120 bunkers protecting generous bent grass fairways and stadium greens. Burne, the Scottish term for creek, is fitting as water comes into play on eight holes. Amber prairie grasses cover the hillsides along many holes, providing vivid contrast to the emerald fairways and roughs.

Troy Burne Golf Club is excited to announce we have expanded our clubhouse to accommodate your dream wedding ceremony and reception or event! Our event center opens up beautifully from the restaurant and bar with gorgeous panoramic views of Troy Burne Golf Course. We are now ready to host your 2014 wedding or event with spacious style and class.

If Someone Was Looking To Golf In The Area, Why Should They Play Your Course? A unique "stadium links" design featuring over 225 acres of rolling countryside. The front nine incorporates sprawling mounds covered in native fescue grasses, while the back dives into a quiet hollow surrounded by wooded areas including pines, birch, oak, and maple trees. Many guests say our greens are the fastest, smooth greens they play each year. The bent-grass fairways will have you feeling like your playing a course you see on TV.

What Tips or Local Knowledge Would You Provide To Help Them Score Better At Your Course?
Play to the middle of each green to minimize the chance of finding a greenside bunker. Relax over your tee shots, plenty of room to play.

Recent Awards or What You Are Most Proud About The Course?
2015-2016 Golf Digest Ranked 8th Wisconsin: Best in State Rankings

What Is The Signature, Most Talked About, or Most Photographed Hole?
Par 3 11th due to the setting and downhill shot, tiny green.

What Is Your Favorite Hole? Any Tips to Play It?
Par 4 2nd hole. Off the tee I place my ball on the right side of the fairway just short of the fairway bunker avoiding the watery grave to the left. My 2nd shot I add 5-10 yards to take the water in front of the green out of play aiming at the center of the green. If I can two-putt I'm always happy with a par on a hole that can cause havoc to the scorecard.

Must Have Dish or Drink after the round at the 19th Hole?
Walleye sandwich washed down with one of our (8) craft beers on tap.

Who Holds Course Record and What Was Their Score?
Steve LeBrun 2005 Nationwide Tour 2nd Round 61

In his adult years, his passion for the game collided with his entrepreneurial spirit and in 2004 launched GolfWisconsin.com. In 2007, the idea for a network of local golf directory sites formed and GolfTrips.com was born. Today, the network consists of a site in all 50 states supported by national sites like GolfTrips.com, GolfGuide.com and GolfPackages.com. It is an understatement to say, Brian is passionate about promoting golf and golf travel on a local, regional, national and international level.
