Golf Course Information
Description
Just 3 miles north of Prescott, Wisconsin, overlooking the St Croix River Valley lies Clifton Highlands Golf Club. Minutes east of St Paul, Minnesota, it has been a favorite of serious golfers for over thirty-five years. It is one of about 20 courses throughout the area designed by Dr Gordon Emerson, and the one he considered to be his finest work. The Highlands offers a premium facility, available to you, at a very fair price.
Challenging to both low and high handicappers, it's a course that can be played day in and day out without tiring of its beauty. It is a fairly tight course with wooded areas, water and sand coming into play. Though there are a few homes bordering parts of the course, they are set back far enough so as not to give a crowded feel.
The fairways can give the illusion that they are tighter than they actually are, and there are a couple of holes that could certainly fool you the first time you visit. It's definitely one of those courses that you'll want to play a couple times to get a good feel for the layout because some local knowledge can certainly come in handy. Wonderful greens, many with darmatic back to front slopes, reflect the tradition of A. W. Tillinghast. The perfectly manicured putting surfaces tend to have some interesting breaks, and although not overly large, they certainly offer plenty of movement. One of the most consistent comments you hear about Clifton Highlands is that the greens can make or break your round. They are always some of the best in the area. Strategically placed bunkers are designed to challenge your driving and shot making skills but are not overly punitive.
Multiple teeing areas allow for a pleasurable game for players of any handicap and guests are strongly encouraged to play the tees that are most suited to their ability. You may want take advantage of the practice range to warm up prior to your game. Practice putting greens are available on both the Championship and Par 3 courses.
For those looking for a less lengthy round, consider the beautiful Par 3 facility. Reached via a tram, you'll experience 9 holes high on the hill overlooking the Wisconsin and Minnesota countryside. Easily walkable, it is a favorite of beginners and seasoned players alike.
After your round enjoy food and beverages in the clubhouse. A complete Pro Shop is on site to provide all you'll need for your game. Lessons are also available from our Golf Professional. The Highlands has enjoyed a 4.5 Star rating from Golf Digest Magazine for many years and has received a number of accolades from local, regional and national writers. Come see why it's said to be "One of Wisconsin's Best".
