Entry Fee is $45 with cash payout and you become a member of Car Golf so you can play using your car when temperatures are below 45 degrees!

INTERVIEW WITH MARK KRAUSE

Brian Weis: Mark, this is crazy! How did you dream up this idea?

Mark Krause: 10 years ago the concept of a was born when Muskego Lakes CC paved cart paths. For the past 4 years a few friends and I would play golf on a specific date in late November and we called the event our "Mitten Open". This name was given to the event by Sandy Potter one of the participants, an appropriate name considering the time of year and the clothing needed to stay warm. Anyways, the day we were suppose to play the weather was 35 degrees with 20 mile an hour winds. I did not want to take a cart and freeze for 4 hours, as a matter of fact, I was trying to think of an excuse not to play. As I was driving to the course it dawned on me that a car would probably fit on these new cart paths. When I got to the club, I drove the course with my Blazer to make sure a cart could stay on the path even around some of the turns. I found that it was no problem so we played that day using our cars as our cart. From that time on, when the temperature was below 45 degrees and our members wanted to play, I allowed them to use their cars. Then one spring for our opening scramble in the middle of April the weather was not very good, so I allowed all participants to use their cars. They loved it. So, for the mitten Open two years ago that originally was just for some close friends I changed the event name and format to our "Car Golf Turkey Schamble".

Brian Weis: What is the format? Can you sahre the details of the tournament?

Mark Krause: All participants received a 12lb turkey, they could use their car as their cart and play a schamble. (this is where you all hit a tee shot, take the best one and then play your own ball the remainder of the hole). We then take the best two scores of the 4 some on each hole. A side skins game is also available with a cash payoff. Payoff to the teams that finish 1st, 2nd, 6th, 10th, 15th and 19th.

Brian Weis: Anything New For This Year?

Mark Krause: This past year I added a membership card to the program. It is called our "Car Golf Membership" card. This serves two purposes, one the participant now has written proof that they really did play golf using their car as their cart. Second, those that play in one of our events and receive this card are now eligible to play golf at MLGC using their car as their cart anytime the temperature gets below 45 degrees. The trail fee is then $3 per car rider along with the existing spring or fall greens fee rate.
